People who know me will have heard me talk about my "retirement project", to create a novel of some kind out of all the journals and fragments of writing that I produced during my student days in Belfast and into the 1980s in London. At UKAway I made a serious start on this project and worked out a framework for the novel, and even more importantly, I think, decided what it is that I'm trying to say, what story I'm trying to tell. It's not my story though bits of it are. It's not a historical document either. It's mostly stuff I made up. That's what writers do. The title is from a Stafford Beer quote: "The creation of hell on earth is just a matter of engineering. The creation of an earthly paradise is an engineering problem also".
