I thought I'd have a go at the Trick of the Light idea seeing as I haven't written anything for a week or two. It's based on a Belle and Sebastian song on The Boy With The Arab Strap called Space Boy Dream.

Kienan Ademetria returns to Kuran, to persuade his former lover, Jayla Kyren, to leave the brothel where she works. Hired by a religious cult to destroy three articificial lifeforms, made to be sextoys, he finds the assignment harder to complete than he imagined.

I belong to a critiquing site, 'Storyshed'. It has helped my writing with detailed crtiques, suggestions, opinions. UKA helped me start writing, and is a fantastic place for people wanting to learn, but it's fair to say that Storyshed has changed my writing significantly, and anyone who has read 'Jalendu' for instance will see the difference from my earlier works. My poem 'Grit within my shell' was actually directed (fondly) at David Gardiner for the relentless critiquing he gave me on 'The Golden Knight' - a while ago three of us, including David, rewrote one of Shadow's 'Dragontail' stories (actually the FIRST one) Later, I stole several of her characters as well, of course. (hee-hee).

Sometimes, though we just have fun and experiment. To liven things up a bit at UKA on the short story front, we three (this time Aliya (Bluepootle) , David (SIRAT) and Myself) all write a story with the same title. Aliya chose it (we are gentlemen) - '(A) Trick of the Light'...

So here is my 'Trick of the Light' - I don't claim it's anything more than fun. Close by, thanks to Andrea, are David and Aliya's stories. Theirs are good!

I'm not quite sure what 'flashfiction' is but the website insists I choose a genre. This is a short story, just plain common or garden fiction. It's about fortune-telling and second string Opera.

My first attempt at a short story (I have been a poetry person so far).
